It was in an old farmhouse in rural Indiana that I discovered my passion. It was there at the age of nine, on an upright piano—more ancient than the farmhouse—that I crafted my first song.

I began lessons around the same time, never much enjoying them, not preparing for them nearly enough. As would continue throughout my adolescence, I’d sit down to practice only to end up playing and composing my own music.

While my love for original composition was encouraged by my family from the time of that very first song, it was upon moving to Fort Wayne, Indiana, at the age of eleven, that I met my first—and only—piano teacher who encouraged it. Her name was Ty, and I am grateful for the luck, coincidence, or perhaps not-so-accidental circumstances that led me to her. Setting aside time during each week’s lesson to play an obligatory new composition (I hated that), she taught me the principles of “creative motion.”

Through those concepts, along with her guidance, I learned how to set in motion the dynamic force we call music, and to allow the creative interplay of physical, spiritual and emotional energy to pour fourth into my composition and performance.

Since then, my life has become increasingly busy and frenetic as an adult. A full schedule put a crimp in my composing and playing; sometimes ceasing all together for months at a time. And like a child swimming in the cold outdoor summer pools of Indiana, I admit to sometimes hesitating before diving back in. Sure I can miss its Zen-like moments of singularly focused tranquility, like when swimming under the surface – relishing the all-consuming joy it brings – but the experience can also be exhausting.

But then... invariably it happens, as it did when finishing this—my first CD. The desire returns along with my physical, spiritual and emotional energy renewed, I dive back in and send that magnificent dynamic force back into motion. “Flight of the Egret” is a culmination of such moments.

I truly hope you enjoy the CD as much as I have in creating it.
